Charleston or Savannah? Charm & 'Walking Ambience'

Here's the premise. The car is parked, and you just plan to walk around the historic district, stopping now and then to absorb the ambience, read an historic marker, take pictures or consult a guidebook.

Charleston

Savannah

Charleston map. So much to see, so little time. A good city map is a must.

Walking tours
Carriage tours
The area around Marion Square and south of Calhoun Street is the historic district. You can walk it yourself in an afternoon, but I recommend studying a little of the history so you'll better appreciate the area, and take along a guidebook. I also recommend walking tours. Unless you have a physical infirmity, they are a much better way to experience the historic section than carriage tours. And they don't smell.

How to Take a Walking Tour of Savannah is the name of this web site. Read it before you start.

The 'Squares' the thing. You will enjoy your walking so much more if you have some idea beforehand of the history and geography (including popular culture - don't forget Forest Gump and Chippewa Square). Savannah's historic area is larger than Charleston's, so allow plenty of time - don't try to see everything on one stroll.

Carriage tours
Walking tours
As in Charleston, there many walking and carriage tours available. Unless you have a physical infirmity, go with the walking tours. A much better way to see the city.
